Vote for your Country in the Battle of the Islands! The Top 15 Cigar Brands on the Market

By Sarah Simmons

 Food / History

There are so many different cigars and cigar brands currently on the market ranging from cheap to incredibly expensive, and ranging from a downright terrible smoke to the best smoke of your life. But how can you know which is the best cigar for you? Whether you are just beginning to smoke cigars or are a seasoned cigar smoker, this list of the top 15 cigar brands currently available on the market can help.

1. Acid cigars

Introduced in 1999, these handmade Nicaraguan cigars offer an herbal aromatic flavor and are available in a variety of sizes. Acid cigars are available in boxes, as well as Krush tins, for the smoker who wants to savor the experience and be able to save the rest for later. The Acid cigar contains a quick burst of flavor that will be enough to satisfy the on-the-go smoker.

2. Arturo Fuente cigars

One of the most well-known brands in the world, the Fuente family's cigars have remained some of the most sought after cigars in America for decades. Up until the 1960s, the cigars were made with Cuban tobacco, but after the U.S. embargo with Cuba was instituted, the cigars were made with Dominican tobacco.

3. Ashton cigars

Ashton cigars are offered in six very different and distinct blends. Created in 1985 with the manufacturing expertise of the world renowned Fuente Family, Ashton cigars use the finest and richest Dominican grown leaf for the filler and binder, and only the oiliest, silkiest Connecticut Shade grown and finest Ecuador (for the VSG) wrappers, resulting in a perfect balance of complexity and character.

4. AVO cigars

AVO cigars are made from select tobaccos which are kept in store until they are fully mature. These contain a large proportion of a specially fermented, matured Piloto Cubano tobacco from the Dominican Republic. The binder leaf is Olor tobacco from the Villa Gonzalez region, and a Connecticut Shade wrapper leaf provides the perfect finishing touch to AVO cigars.

5. C.A.O. cigars

Founded by Cano A. Ozgener in Nashville in 1968, today C.A.O. products can be found on every continent in the world except Antarctica. C.A.O. produces 11 cigar lines that have all been rated "90" ("Outstanding") or above by Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider.

6. Cohiba cigars

Developed by Diaz y Cia in l978, the Dominican Cohiba cigar is the only Cohiba cigar that can be purchased legally in the United States. It features a dark, rich wrapper leaf grown in the sub-tropical climate of Cameroon, supple and flavorful Jember binder grown in Indonesia, and smooth-smoking Piloto Cubano filler leaves grown in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Cohiba is a deeply satisfying cigar, rich in flavor and history.

7. Kensington cigars

With the Kensington (manufactured by Alec Bradley), smokers will experience ultra-premium, mild-bodied quality at a class-leading price. This is a cigar that is intended to be enjoyed after dinner with a select bourbon or tawny port yet is mild enough to be appreciated any time of the day.

8. La Gloria Cubana cigars

Once Little Havana's best kept secret, La Gloria Cubana has become a favorite of cigar smokers everywhere. Available in 23 sizes, in both Natural and Maduro, La Gloria Cubana's special blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler and binder become one with its beautifully aged Ecuadoran wrapper to deliver the full, rich flavor that is its trademark. Produced both in Miami and the Dominican Republic, La Gloria Cubana's taste experience is rich, flavorful and full-bodied.

9. Macanudo cigars

Crafted exclusively in the Dominican Republic, every Macanudo Cafe cigar is made with the finest Connecticut Shade wrapper (cured and aged by the company itself), a flavorful blend of Dominican tobaccos and a select binder grown in the rich St. Andres Tuxtla Valley of Mexico. To assure the same smoothness in cigar after cigar, the makers of Macanudo use only the most thoroughly aged tobaccos.

10. Medici cigars

The Medici cigar (also manufactured by Alec Bradley) is the ideal choice for a smoker looking for a medium to full-bodied cigar with a large ring gauge. Using a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper as well as quality Honduran tobacco, it is one of the most popular brands in the medium-to full-bodied range. The wrapper is a flawless, shiny, Nicaraguan Habano wrapper that allows for the cigar to be rich and thick, with hints of leather. The Medici delivers a tasty experience to cigar smokers, and everyone looks good puffing on one.

11. Oliva cigars

First-rate bundled cigars, Oliva cigars have consistently come out with new blends that have been well received by the cigar community, and have had several cigars receive high ratings in Cigar Aficionado. Known as one of most delicious cigars, the Oliva has hints of spice, as well as coffee and dark chocolate flavors.

12. Padrón cigars

The Padrón Family delivers only the finest, handmade, complex cigars crafted with the flavor of Cuban heritage. Their primary mission is the exceptional quality of their product, not the quantity produced, resulting in a rare cigar that flies off the shelves whenever available.

13. Punch cigars

Not a conventional cigar, and probably not the first cigar for a new smoker to try, Punch lives up to its name with a bold, full-bodied taste that appeals to smokers who follow their own instincts as opposed to following the crowd. The wrapper is a full-flavored leaf grown in Ecuador and the filler is a rich blend of Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos.

14. Rocky Patel cigars

Created by Hollywood celebrity attorney Rakesh "Rocky" Patel, Rocky Patel cigars are quickly becoming one of the most sought after cigar names around. The company does not own any plantations or factories, but has focused on strong quality control measures and refined the drying, fermentation, aging, and blending processes. Handmade in Honduras and Nicaragua, these cigars range from inexpensive to premium choices.

15. Romeo y Julieta cigars

Romeo Y Julieta cigars are a modern re-creation of the original Cuban brand. The company takes pride in continuing to make smokers fall in love with their cigars. Today it is offered in seven lines with tobaccos from over six countries.

Cigar enthusiasts will not always agree on the top name cigar brands and many may not be willing to make an adjustment in their selection of stogies. Everyone has their own personal favorites due to the set or setting in which the cigar is smoked. However, that does not mean that this list is faulty or lacks credibility. Consumers can confidently rely on this list to offer both new and exciting choices as well as classic cigar favorites to try.

Resource Box is a leading online cigar distributor that carries, sells, and promotes all major brands of premium cigars, from the world's bestselling brands to hard-to-find boutique lines, including Acid cigars, Cohiba cigars, Oliva cigars and more.
