As I mentioned in http://www.caribbeanchoice.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=76605 - another thread , we are going to redesign the recipe section.  One major component of that is how to categorize the recipes so that people can find them easier.

What are your suggestions for categories?  Do the categories that other recipe websites and books have work well, or could it be done a better way?

I am calling on all cooks to contribute so we can make the best recipe section possible.

Ideas?

If possible, apart from the 'Search by Country'...

Search by ingredients...
Search by categories: Appetizers, salads, soups, main dish, side dish, drinks, desserts/sweets...
A photo section
A cookbook section
A Holiday section (Christmas;Thanksgiving & Easter)
Special Occasion (ex.birthdays and wedding menu)

Great, Scott. It will be easier for people looking for recipes from other countries.

Thanks for the suggestions.  As many of you know, I don't cook, so you have to guide me here.

Specifically what categories do you think we should have?  Weezie mentioned many good ones.  Any others?

Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner for whole meals. Veggies, meat, pasta, soups, deserts, appetizers. Sould also be a section for poetry since we are talking about food here. Oops .. forgot one.. Beverages.
Maybe answer some questions like ... Why do Dominicanos make the best pork chops? What is the best way to stir fungi? How many different kinds of Kalaloo are there? What is the best time of year to run down to the mangrove and catch land crab? ............ Actually now I think about it this could be the best part of the 'book'.

Yes, but how do you stir it with a wooden spoon? Somehow mine never comes out right and the ladies I talk to say I probably dont stir it right. You got to stir it in a 'kind of a way'. Just curious if one of you hotshots might be able to splain it.
I like it with butter and okra, not oil.
By the way when you (Vutjebal) says we, what we are you talking about? Sort of interesting the word is almost exactly the same.

Thanks for the suggestions Liac.  It's not too late.  I'm trying to get feedback before we begin redesigning the recipe section.

I really like the "By Occassion" categorization.

The recipe that I use for cornmeal is:-

Slice 6 ochroes and cook in boil 1 1/2 cups boiling water with salt, When ochroes are soft break them with a fork and stir in 1 cup cornmeal, cook stirring constantly until the mixture is thick and smooth. Mould in a well greased basin. Turn on to a serving dish and baste with 1 teaspooon butter.

You can make it without the ochroes too.

Most islands or countries in the region have a national dish, could we do something around that idea? Usually it is using an abundant resource in the area ... I find that interesting too ... the history that is ...

Secondly, themes are quite popular in entertaining too.

A breakdown of  appetizers, entree, main course, desserts, salads, soups, etc.
I love the idea of "one pot cooking" ... thats comfort food to me!

I love Caymanian's contributions with the historical backgrounds.

A section on the spices of the region would be quite educational too. Am questioned a lot by my north american friends of the uses and traditions.

There isn't too much out there on drinks specific to the region either.

Thats a big job ... thanks Scott ... CC is a great community for expats. Am spreading the word.
Can't wait to see what you come up with!

There must be one category for meals like lunch, dinner, breakfast & one different category for snacks & other items which does not have proper fulfillment like food.
