Topic: Member Ranks
Posted By: Scott
Subject: Member Ranks
Date Posted: 02áSeptá2003 at 3:12am

We just installed these new forums and one of the features of the forums is giving members ranks according to how many posts they have made.  The default ranks are pretty plain and I thought I'd take some suggestions for new ranks.

Here are the current ranks:

0 posts = Lurker
1 posts = Newbie
40 posts = Member
??? posts = Member
??? posts = Senior Member
???? posts = Senior Member
???? posts = Senior Member
???? posts = Senior Member

Have any better suggestions than Newbie and Member and Senior Member?  Post them here!

After talking to a few people offline, we have finally decided on a ranking system.  Since people with one post start out as a Landlubber, you probably can guess that we decided to go with a Pirate theme for the rankings.

I'm not going to post the specifics here, but you'll get to see as you and other people post more.

Enjoy and have fun!

I tweaked it some more!  Now there are 9 different rankings members can achieve!  You are a "Lurker" until you post something and then become a "Newbie" once you make your first post.  After that, you start moving up the ranks based on the number of posts.

I'll leave it to you to discover the rest of the ranks.

Yes.  The defaults of newbie, member and senior member were not that exciting.  So we came up with something more interesting.

Okay...scott....here is  what  we  were talking about....!!!!
and to get on the forum...you need  to post something....
You are a "Lurker" until you post something and then become a "Newbie" once you make your first post.  After that, you start moving up the ranks based on the number of posts.

Things are changing, vutje. We are pitching in with the posts. You're not alone here. You'll soon be promoted to 'moderator' or some other high-ranking title.

Certain titles, like Moderator, are given based on specific experience and duties, rather than how active someone is on the forum, or whether or not they are my or Joseph's friend.  Ilam96 was given Moderator status because she was an experienced moderator, was an active moderator of other Caribbean related forums, and performed the duties of moderator on this website.  Titles like Moderator are not given lightly since that is a very serious position with serious responsibilities, and it is inappropriate and sometimes disasterous to give such a position just because someone is your friend.  Because of this, we usually give the ability to moderate our forums to people who already moderate other forums, although it is possible we make an exception and train someone.  So probably no new moderators for awhile until we get busier.

Also, anyone who achieves an Admiral rank or higher (ranks with gold stars or pips), like Vutjebal and Schucander have distinguished themselves as being the top members on the site.  Changing their rank to something else may actually reduce their prestige rather than expand it.  We regard the Admiral ranks some of the most prestigious ranks on CaribbeanChoice.

Are you implying that I would give the rank of Moderator based on who I like rather than who is qualified for the job?

Arra is not qualified for the job and it is not a job she is interested in.  Moderator is not a rank, it is a position.

A Moderator is a very trusted position which holds a lot of authority and responsibilities.  Their job is to make sure that the forum rules are being followed and that the forums remain a safe place for discussions and the community.  This person must be fair and unbiased, not break the forum rules themselves, be understanding and compassionate but at the same time operate with the authority that comes with the job.

Moderators remove spam, organize the forum by moving posts to the correct forum area, enforce forum rules by giving warnings or penalties up to and including banning.

At CaribbeanChoice, we prefer to only take experienced moderators who have moderated on other forums, instead of train new ones.  But if we had to train our own, we would look at a person's character and fairness and diplomacy in dealing with issues that arise, and then train them on how we specifically want them dealt with.  For example, when to move or delete posts, when to warn someone and when to ban then, what constitutes a violation of the forum rules and what does not, etc.

Mostly it must be someone who is respected, but not feared, who can enforce the forum rules with fairness and deal with conflicts with diplomacy.  Unfortunately those are some things that are hard to train in a small amount of time, which is why we prefer people who already have those qualities.

Vutje, have you seen a medico about that pain? Blend some aloes and drink. Also, if you have ginger, pound some, make a poultice, put it on the spot where you feel the pain and band it down. Leave it on for as long as you wish. It will ease the pain and maybe cure what's causing the pain.

Well, originally I did not anticipate people going above 10,000 posts, and we already have two members over 10,000 posts, and I am approaching 10,000 posts myself (although my rank will never change).  I was programming additional ranks as we went along as Vutjebal and Shucander hit 20,000, then 30,000.  So last month I decided to just program them all, up to 100,000, that way I do not have to touch it again.

Plus, we will be adding more ways to earn posts.  For example, commenting on articles and recipes now earn posts.  Before commenting on recipes did not earn posts and you could not comment on articles.  Eventually adding recipes will add to your post count.  With some of the changes, we will see people earning higher ranks faster.

Also, it should be noted that each rank is usually harder to get than the last one.  It gets progressively harder to achieve the next level.

For example, there are 12 ranks from posts 0 through 10,000 but only 7 ranks from 10,000 to 100,000.

Or put it another way, you go through 12 ranks on your way to 10,000 posts, but then you need 10,000 more posts to get to the next level.

Well, a post is a post is a post, so your post count only increases by 1 for each post.  However, you may get more votes in the battle for an item.  For example, posting a recipe currently gives you 25 votes for the country you represent, and 0 posts are added to your post count.  We eventually want to change it so that your post count increases by 1 for that as well.

Also, I think the new version of the forum has a point system.  That may change things as well.
