Luke 4:9-12 – Do not put the Lord your God to the test

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written: “‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” – Luke 4:9-12 (NIV)

When Satan tries to twist the Scripture to get Jesus to jump, Jesus holds His ground. Jesus was secure in the Father’s care. He did not need to test God by doing foolish things. Are we able to trust the Father’s care so much that we can stay the course? God has already proven His love for you through Jesus Christ; rest in that love. Those who can hold on to this are less prone to careless actions.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

John 1:45-46 – Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip. – John 1:45-46 (NIV)

When God decided to come to earth He did not come on a throne, but a manger. He did not identify with Jerusalem, but Nazareth, a small border town that was filled with half-breed Jews and Samaritans. Nazareth was seen as an insignificant place. Yet God was pleased to be associated with Nazareth. So if we wonder if anything good can come out of our lives, remember Nazareth. The fact that God might use someone like you or me has been the pattern since the beginning of time.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

we believe God wants you to know ... that God will get you through the pain.

Everyone experiences pain sometimes, emotional and physical. Next time it threatens to overwhelm you, take a deep breath. As you breathe slowly, picture God holding you, crying with you, giving you the strength to get through.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

Numbers 14:24 – my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly

But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. – Numbers 14:24 (NIV)

Caleb was one of the 12 spies sent to see what the Promised Land looked like. When the other spies could see only giants and problems, Caleb saw another opportunity for God to be glorified. In many ways, we find ourselves constantly facing a Promised Land – a place that is exciting, yet unexplored. We finally get a grip on one season of life only for it to melt into another. We understand an industry just in time for that industry to change. But each change is another opportunity for God to be glorified. It is when our hearts are wholly focused on His faithfulness that we inherit the new horizon in front of us.

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

we believe God wants you to know ... that there are no wrongs that God cannot make right.
So you've been hurt or maybe you hurt someone else. God can fix it. God may be nudging you this very moment to ask for forgiveness or be willing to forgive. Trust God, listen and act. There is no wrong that God cannot make right

Proverbs 12:18 – Reckless words pierce like a sword

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. – Proverbs 12:18 (NIV)

Our culture esteems quick wit, but many times that wit devolves into words that hurt others for a laugh. The Proverbs challenges us to see our tongue as a healing balm. How do you do that? It starts with what we are looking for. Instead of looking for the inconsistencies in other people’s lives, start to notice the strengths. When what we notice is turned into words, we can encourage others in ways that few people do. An occasional jab is fun, but may we be known more for the way we build others up instead of tearing them down.
It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

we believe God wants you to know ... that you belong.
You are part of a community: people of faith. Worship with others, share with others, experience God with others. You are not in this alone; you have an entire family of believers out there. Today is a good day to seek some of them out.
