Topic: Changing the Forums to 3 Columns Posted: 14 Jan 2010 at 6:51am |
Now that people have larger monitors than when we first added the forums, we are looking at the possibility of changing the layout of the forums to be 3 columns, instead of the current 2 columns. This would make it easier to navigate since there would be more room for navigation, and we would also be able to better highlight related content from related sections. For example, the Haiti forum could have links to new articles about Haiti, and the recipe forums could have information about new recipes in the side column. It also makes the forums more like the rest of the site, which already has a 3 column layout.
The biggest disadvantage is that the space for posts would be narrower, and on smaller monitors that may effect how easy it is to read.
What do you think? Would changing to a 3 column layout effect you? Would you like us to change the forums to a 3 column layout similar to the rest of the site?

Well, the forums have been converted to a three column format, like the rest of the site. I hope you like it. I still want to tweak it a bit, but at least it is up and working.

We've already added forum specific navigation on the left hand side (recipe section navigation for recipe related forums, Cuba navigation for the Cuba forum, etc.) and plan on adding related links on the left as well, like related articles or recipes, etc. That way it has more relevant links based on what forum or topic you are looking at.

Whatever you think is best, Scott. I'll love CC no matter how many columns...
