It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.

Some flags from Texas history:

This flag flew over the Alamo.  It is the Mexican flag, with 1824 in the center, instead of the Mexican seal.  The 1824 stands for the Mexican Constitution of 1824, which Dictator Santa Ana suspended.  Originally the Texans, like many other Mexican states, were fighting to restore the Mexican Constitution of 1824.  Texas and the Yucatan were the only Mexican States to successfully secede from Mexico, forming their own republics.  The Republic of the Yucatan later rejoined The Mexican United States, while Texas joined the United States of America.  (Mexico is actually a federal union, like the United States, composed of states.  United Mexican States currently has 31 states, the United States of America has 50.)

The Mexican Army approached the town of Gonzales and demanded the cannon the town was given for defense.  Instead of surrendering the cannon, the Texans hoisted the flag "Come and Take It" to let the Mexican Army know that they were not going to give up the cannon without a fight.

The flag of the Republic of Texas.  It was later used for the State of Texas as well.  It is the only state flag that can (and must be according to Texas law), be flown at the same height as the U.S. flag if flown on different flag poles.  All other states, must, by law, fly their flag at least 8 inches lower than the U.S. flag.  The reason for this is because Texas was an independent country prior to joining the Union, and therefore deserves the same recognition as such.  The Texas flag is also always flown at the same height as foreign country flags for the same reason.
