I can't say I have many friends, but I try to be a friend to all, and there are some special people who are true friends, who treat me special and truly care about me.  I am thankful for those people.

There are good people out there, just unfortunately they seem to be rare.  Actually, I think what is more accurate is most people are resigned and cynical and won't open their heart anymore.  I think if you dig deep enough, there is some good in everyone.

What I do that works is I be a friend to everyone.  I give my love and friendship first.  Then it is up to them to be a friend or not in return.  Typically they will either be good to me, or they will take without giving in return.  After a short time you can see who is a friend or not, and who is just another user.

Even with my friends, I rarely would put myself in a position where I would get hurt if something went wrong.  I do protect myself.

And anything I give, I give freely.  It is a gift.  If they turn out to be a user, then its still a gift.  I may reduce the number of gifts I give them, but I never stop caring for them as a person.

And sometimes being a friend to someone who doesn't know how to be a friend will change them.  Sometimes not.  But its worth it in the times that it does.

I stop caring for those who betray me.

Luckily I haven't had anyone betray me.  But I also try not to put myself in a position where I could be betrayed either.

Scott, I don't think a person would put him/herself in a position to be betrayed. You trust the people you consider to be your friends, and don't expect them to hurt or betray you.
