Here is an interesting experiment that someone did and blogged about - eating on less than $1 a day.

Hungry for a Month

For the month of November, Iím only spending $30 on food. The only exception will be things that are freely available to the average person (salt taken from restaurants, sauce packets from Taco Bell, free coffee from an office). Buying in advance is fine, but at the end of the month, it all has to add up to $30 or less.

It is quite possible and doable. I have conducted similar and live on $20.00 per month.  My food was purchased at the $1.00 store.  I'm vegetarian so meat, fish, eggs and milk is not part of my diet.  My largest expense was at the fruit stand and I did not buy drinks; I drank boiled water.  Also, I did not eat bread or pastries.  I sometimes had oatmeal for dinner which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I bought and ate:
2 large containers of oatmeal ~ $2.00
4 one pound packs of beans/peas ~ $2.00
2 24ozs packs frozen mixed vegetables ~ $2.00
2 two pounds packs of rice ~ $2.00
6 small boxes raisins ~ $1.00
I bought fruits that were in season and on sale at the fruit stand

Each meal costs between $5 and $10.  Some times I eat once, and sometimes I eat more than once.

In college I survived on popcorn and coffee during the week and Taco Bell on the weekends.  Where I worked at the time had a carnival style popcorn maker and free coffee, so that's what I filled up on daily.  I probably spent about $30 to $50 a month on food back then.
