European Union United Kingdom Cayman IslandsJunior Carnival Parade Route Confirmed

Cayman Batabano Carnival 2006

 Press Release

Wednesday, 15 March, 2006

Members of the Cayman Carnival Batabano Committee met with officers of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) Traffic Department on Tuesday 14 March to confirm the routes for this year's Batabano street parades, including the new route for the first ever stand-alone Junior Carnival Parade on Saturday 6 May.

For the first time in the history of Cayman Carnival Batabano, the Junior Carnival featuring school and youth groups will take place a week earlier than the adult parade, which is scheduled for Saturday 13 May. The junior street parade will start at the Glass House at 3 pm; it will then make its way to Harbour Drive and back to the Glass House.

A prize giving is scheduled for 6 pm where the trophy for Best School Group will be awarded and all participating schools will receive a cash donation from the Cayman Carnival Batabano Committee.

"We would like to thank the RCIPS for their assistance and support of carnival once again," commented Donna Myrie, Chair of the Batabano Committee.

"Our carnival continues to develop and grow every year. By separating the junior and adult street parades, we now have two exciting weekends of events for carnival-goers to enjoy, while maximising the safety and enjoyment of families and children participating."

"We are really excited that working with the RCIPS, we can provide a safe and appropriate environment for the children taking part with lots of family-friendly activities," she added.

Other children's activities will be on-hand at the Glass House following the parade including face painting, characters and children's food including popcorn and ice cream. There will be no alcohol available at Junior Carnival events and adult spectators will be encouraged to behave appropriately for a family event.

Schools and youth groups that would like to take part can contact Donna Myrie on 916 1740 or Benedict John on 925 0265 for more information. More details, including photo galleries and previews of this year's costumes are available on the newly re-designed Cayman Carnival Batabano website
